Abstract

Flexible polyurethane foams are made by mixing a polyisocyanate with a mixture of a foaming agent, a catalyst and an esterified polyether-polyol of formula: in which A is a residue of an initiator having 2 to 4 atoms of active H, with an active H equiv. wt. between 400 and 2,500; z is the residue of an internal anhydride of a polycarboxylic acid, pref. maleic acid; one R is H and the other R is H or alkyl radical of 1-20 C phenyl, pheoxymethyl or alkoxymethyl; m has a mean value between 1.0 and 2.0; n is 1-5; x is 2 to 4, and y is 1 or 2. Pref. A is the residue of a polyoxyalkylene polyol started from glycerine; n is 1 and x is about 3. The polyisocyanate is pref. toluene- or polymethylene polyphenyl diisocyanate. The foams have good physical properties.
