Abstract
A pyrogen-free aqueous solution of an alkali-metal salt of a magnesium chelate compound of ethylene diamine-N,N1-tetra-acetic acid at pH 7.2-7.4 is used for medical injection. The disodium compound is produced by dissolving repeatedly crystallized ethylene diamine tetracetic acid in a pyrogen-free aqueous solution of 2 mols. pure sodium hydroxide per mol. acid with agitation and gentle heating, and adding 1 mol. magnesium chloride, acetate, oxide, hydroxide or carbonate. The solution is concentrated by boiling and the pH adjusted by addition of hydrochloric, acetic or citric acid, or of sodium hydroxide.ALSO:A preparation for injection, to reduce by base-exchange the calcium ions in the bloodstream, consists of a pyrogen-free aqueous, suitably isotonic, solution of an alkali metal salt of a magnesium chelate compound of ethylene diamine N, N1 tetraacetic acid having a pH of 7.2-7.4. Alternatively, the solution is incorporated in a water-miscible ointment for absorption through the skin. Isotonic solutions suitably contain 5 per cent glucose. The disodium magnesium chelate compound is produced from pure ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (see Group IV (b)), the pH of the solution being finally brought to 7.2-7.4 by addition of hydrochloric, acetic or citric acid, or of sodium hydroxide.
