Abstract

715,573. Charging glass furnaces. CANNING TOWN GLASS WORKS, Ltd., and FARROW, P. April 30, 1953 [July 24, 1952], No. 18777/52. Class 51 (2) Apparatus for charging batch material to a glass furnace comprises superposed hoppers 4 and 1 disposed over a doghouse 2, and a reciprocating ram 9 with a flexible drive to a pneumatic cylinder 12 adapted to push the batch material forwardly and downwardly under an arch 7 in the furnace wall below the surface of the molten glass. The lower hopper 1 seats on a box-shaped hollow body with water cooled walls 5 defining a forwardly diverging opening 6. The ram 9 has wedge shaped nose facilitating lateral spread of the batch and its speed may be controlled by a variable speed rotary valve regulating the air supply to the cylinder 12.
