Abstract

715,404. Oscillating machines. ADAMS, ENGINEERING, Inc., L. S. Feb. 21, 1952 [Feb. 28, 1951], No. 4581/52. Class 35 [Also in Group VIII] A torsional oscillation is imparted to a roller 1 in addition to its continuous rotation, by means of A.C. electromagnets 20. The roller 1 is secured to a tube 5 which is mounted in a bearing 8 permitting angular movement corresponding to the torsional oscillation, the tube also carrying a rigid flange 7 on which the armatures 34 of the electromagnets are mounted. A torsion shaft 9 is secured to the end of the tube and is supported on a bearing 16. A pair of heavy wheels 11, 17 are secured to the shaft 9 by radial bolts 13 and a split ring collar 14, and an additional heavy plate 10 secured by bolts 12 to the wheel 11 carries the coil parts 20 of the electromagnets. The electromagnet pole-faces are set at about 20 degrees. Since the combined mass of the roller and armature assembly is small compared with that of the heavy wheels 11, 17 most of the movement is in the roller and little is transmitted to the drive. This may be by means of a belt 33 situated at a nodal point along the shaft length. The effective length of the torsion shaft, and therefore the natural resonant frequency of the system is adjusted by varying the thickness of a spacing ring 15.
