Abstract

715,383. Fluid-actuated valves. STERLING INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 11, 1952 [April 11, 1951], No. 8460/51. Class 135. [Also in Group XXVIII] A valve controlled conduit, e.g. for filling a tank, has valve operating-means movable to positively close the valve or hold the valve open through a spring acting against e.g. a piston diaphragm subject to valve outlet or back pressure and which closes the valve automatically if the pressure exceeds a predetermined value. The conduit comprises a tank inlet 1 having a rim 2 carrying bayonet lugs 3 and notches 4 on its outer end face, and containing a non- return valve 5, the inlet co-operating with a hose outlet having a spigot 11 which can only be pressed into the inlet when outlet lugs 13 enter the notches 4, after which a sleeve 15 is rotated to bring a notched outlet flange 16 behind the bayonet lugs to secure the outlet and inlet together. The handle 42 is then turned to the position shown so that a crank and rod 40, 43, compresses a spring 45 contained within a piston 34 carrying an outlet valve 31, so that the valves 31 and 5 open. The piston slides in a cylinder 24 supported within the outlet, so that when fluid back pressure attains a certain value it acts on the piston and moves the valve towards its closed position against the spring and atmospheric pressure acting on the piston via passage 28. A cam 50 on the handle entering a notch 53 in the sleeve 15 prevents the sleeve being rotated to uncouple the outlet and inlet unless the handle is turned to close the outlet valve.
