Abstract

1,163,211. Valves. CHADBURNS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd. 19 Dec., 1967 [19 Jan., 1967], No. 2877/67. Heading F2V. [Also in Division F1] A valve for the outlet of a pump dispensing a measured quantity of beer (see Division F1) is opened manually, as shown, or automatically by the beer discharge pressure, Fig. 4 (not shown), at the beginning of the pump discharge stroke, and is held open by the flow of beer until the end of the discharge stroke. The valve comprises a valve member 35 guided by a flow regulator member 33, and coupled by a rod 36 to a diaphragm or piston 37a. The effective areas of valve member 35 and diaphragm 37a are substantially equal, a spring 39 biasing the valve member to its closed position. The valve is opened by depressing handle 41, a forked member 42 lifting member 37 and valve member 35. A vent passage 45 through rod 36 is closed by a seal 46 when the valve is open. When beer flows through the valve, the pressure drop across regulator 33 and valve member 35 is such that the valve is held open by the beer pressure on diaphragm 37a. When discharge ceases, spring 39 closes the valve. In Fig. 4 (not shown), handle 41 is omitted, and the effective area of diaphragm 37a is made greater than that of valve member 35, so that the valve opens automatically when the pump discharge stroke begins.
