Abstract

715,113. Electric discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., PRICE, W. A., and WALDRAM, J. M. March 12, 1951 [March 10, 1950], No. 6099/50. Class 39(1) [Also in Group XI] A lantern for a high pressure metal vapour lamp 10 has a shield 42 with an aperture 40 through which a seal portion 16 of the lamp passes, the shield fitting closely around the seal and screening the seal from radiated and/or convected heat from hot parts of the lamp, and the lantern having means such as a further shield 43 to form a duct for directing a stream of cooling gaseous fluid. such as the surrounding air, which has not passed around the hot parts of the lamp, on to the seal portion 19 at the side of the shield 42 remote from the hot parts of the lamp. The shields 42, 43 are preferably made of stainless steel. The shield 42 has packing members 46, 47 of asbestos, fitting closely around the seal portion 16. A treble or multiple shield can be used to form a double or multi-passage duct for cooling gaseous fluid. The lamp may be arranged horizontally and ducts for cooling air arranged vertically, each limb of the lamp being arranged to extend through one such duct. A fan may be used for driving the gaseous fluid over the seal portion. Side flaps on the shield 42, converging deflector plates 49 and an aperture 50 may be provided to improve the cooling effect. The lamp is mounted between conical centres 24 and 25, the lower centre 25 being fixed to a framework consisting a plate 30 carried by the casing 31 of the lantern which is of generally cylindrical form and the upper centre 24 being slidable in a guide 27 under the control of a spring 28. The guide 27 is mounted on a bridgepiece 32 carried by pillars 33 extending upwardly from the plate 30. The lantern may be provided with a spherical mirror 34 arranged behind the bulb of the lamp.
