Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT M. DIXON, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lamps and will be described with particular reference to gas car-lamps, although the invention is not limited thereto.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown a lamp in which my invention is embodied.
In the drawings, Figure I is a sectional elevation of a lamp in which my invention is embodied, the said section being taken through the central plane of the lamp; and Fig. II is a fragmentary detail view of a deflector-ring and a ring for supporting the dome and deflector-ring, as will be described.
The principal object of my invention is to produce means such as will be hereinafter described by which the incoming air will be properly guided and directed to the burners, which will prevent objectionable deflection of the air and which will likewise serve as a protector for the metallic parts supporting the glassware of the lamp.
A further object of my invention is to pro vi de means whereby the ring or deflector used for carrying out the objects just mentioned may be supported from the same support. which supports the dome of the lamp when such dome is used.
In the drawings, Aindicates the body-casting, so called, of the lamp, cored to provide a passage (1 for the admission of the gas and chambered, as at b, to effect the proper admission and distribution of air. The bodycasting is apertured laterally, as at c, to permit the admission of air from. the crown-piece d. At the upper end of the body-casting a delivery-tube e is provided. A gasway or gas-pipe f is suspended from the body-casting, which gasway or gas-pipe supports the cen ter tube or gas-admission conduit 9 of a cluster of burners h. The body-casting also directly supports a reflector-casing t, located above the burners 7i and surrounding an enveloped cup-shape reflector of a general truncated conical form supporting from the gasway f, a suitable spider I: being preferably cast on the gasway f to act as a centering device for the reflector-casing i. A lock 5 5 ing-piecc Zis preferably provided for the gasway and is mounted upon the body-casting for instance, by screws, as shown.
A suitable supportirig-frame m is screwthreaded upon the body-casting and serves to support some of the operative parts of the lamp. This supporting-frame is provided with downwardly-extending arms 0 and a ring p. Hinged at g to the said ringis a bezel or support ring r for the globe, a spring-catch .9 being provided for holding the said bezel or support-ring in place. Secured to the ring pas, for instance, by screws tis a ring u, having an upturned edge 7. and studs in. This ring it, which is shown fraginentarily in Fig. II, serves the double purpose of supporting the dome 3C and the deflector-ring y. The deflector-ring constitutes also a reflector in that it is coated or made with reflecting material. The dome an rests upon the face of the ring a in the rear of the upturned edge 2), which thereby forms a channel for the recep tion of the said dome and, in addition, serves to center the dome and prevent lateral movement which might otherwise be produced by the oscillations of the car. The upper edge of the dome rests in a groove 2 in the supportin frame m. The dome is permanently provi ed at both edges with a suitable soft packing 1, such as asbestos or other non-heat conducting material, herein shown as embracing the edges of the dome, being secured thereto by water-glass or other suitable cementing material.
Secured to the studs of the ring a, as by screws 3, and spaced away from said ring is a deflector-ring y. An annular space 4 is left between the ring it and the ring 1 in order to afford a roper distribution of air and an eificient globe-wash. The bezel or support-ring 5 is provided with a groove at its lower face for the reception of the upper inturned edge 5 of the globe, which up er inturned edge 5 has permanently secured around the same a strip of asbestos packing 6, as in the case of the I00 dome previously mentioned.
The upper inturned edge of the globe rests upon a supporting-ring 7, herein shown as having an outwardly-turned edge and secured to the bezel or support-ring by screws [0 5 8. The products of combustion are removed from the lamp throu h the reflector-casing i and passages 9 in the body-casting.
In operation the gas is brought to the burners by the gasway a. The air enters either through or around the crown-piece (1, passes through the aperture c, thence through a lower set of apertures 10 in the body-casting, enters the dome and passes downward. At the lower edge of the dome the descending air-current contacts with the outer face of the deflector-ring, being thereby deflected into contact with the globe, and thereby prevented from impinging directly from above upon the lamp-flames. The deflected air current or body passes along the inner surface of the globe and is brought to the flames from beneath. This is one of the valuable functions of the ring y, as this ring 1/, in addition to directing the incoming current of air properly, also serves to prevent such current of air from impin ing upon the flames from above. The pror nets of combustion pass between the reflector-casing i and the cupshape reflector upward through the passages 9 in the body-casting.
Having described my invention, what I. claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
l. In a lamp, the combination of means for admitting air from above a burner located at or near the lowermost portion of the lamp and an annular deflector adapted to divide and deflect the air downwardly and. also outwardly into contact with an air-directingportion of the lamp, whereby the flame is shieldcd from the direct impingement of air from above and is properly fed with air from be low.
2. In a lamp, the combination of means for admitting air, a burner in the lower portion of the said lamp, a deflector of a general annular form depending downwardly located above the burner and below the air-inlet and adapted to deflect the air outwardly against an air-directing portion. of the lamp.
3. In a lamp, the combination of a burner, an air-inlet adapted to admit air from above the burner, a substantially vertical deflectorring located below the air-inlet and above the burner and a substantially closed inclosure surrounding the deflector-ring and the burner.
4. In a lamp, the combination of a trans lucent inclosure having an air-inlet, a burner contained therein at the lower part thereof and a substantially vertical deflector-ring lo cated within the inclosure above said burner and below the air-inlet of the inclosure adapted for deflecting air outwardly and downwardly.
5. In a lamp, the combination of an inclosed burner, means for supplying air thereto from above and a deflector-ring contained within the said inclosure and arranged between the air-inlet and the burner and adapted to deflect the air outwardly and downwardly so as to prevent the same from impinging directly upon the flame.
6. In a lamp, the combination oi a bodycasting and an inclosure for the burner sus pended therefrom and having an air-inlet, a burner located at the lower part of the inclosure and completely surrounded thereby, an air-inlet for adn'iitting air to the flame from above and a rleflector-easing adapted to deflect the air-current outwardly and downwardly against the ii'iclosure and located above the burner and below the air-inlet.
7. In a lamp, the combination of a burner, an inclosure completely surrounding the said burner, the said inclosure being constituted partly of transluccnt material, means for admitting air to the inclosure from above and a deflector-casing intervening between the airinlet and the burner and adapted for deflecting the air entering the inclosure outwardly and downwardly.
8. In a lamp, the combination of a twopart inclosure, one part of which is movable for the purpose of giving access to the burner, a burner located within the said movable part and a deflecto1casing connected to the stationary part adapted for deflecting the air entering the movable part outwardly and downwardly therein.
9. In a lamp, the combination of a globe and dome, a burner completely enveloped thereby, a draft-producing casing above the burner, an air-inlet and a deflector-casing surrounding the draft-producing casing located intermediate the burner and the air-inlet and adapted to deflect the air outwardly and downwardly from the burner.
10. In a lamp, the combination with a burner and its inclosure, of a ring a and detachable deflector-ring 'y the said deflectorring y being supported from the said ring a in such manner as to leave an annular space 4 between the said rings.
11. In a lamp, the combination of a main frame or support, a gasway suspended therefrom, a burner suspended from the gasway, a casing 11 located above the burner, a translucent inclosure for the burner and the casing, the space within the translucent inclosure around the burner and the lower end of the casing being substantially unobstructed and a deflector-casing located within the translucent inclosure; above the burner and extending above the lowest point of the casing.
