Abstract

[Also in Group XXXV] In an automatic control system in which the load on an electric motor driving a hammer-mill is maintained constant by varying the rate of feed of material to the mill, the flow of the material from a hopper is regulated by a hydraulic gate valve. A three phase A.C. motor 2 drives the mill 1 to which material is fed by a belt 12 from a hopper 6. The outlet from the hopper 6 is controlled by a hydraulic ram 15 which is raised by a pump 33 when a bye-pass valve 39 is closed. This valve remains closed, and hence the feed is steadily increased, until a contact making ammeter 45 in the motor circuit energizes a solenoid 43 to open the valve and allow the ram to descend. A hinged plate 19 and contacts 26 disconnect the motor 32 driving the pump 33 when the hopper 6 is empty. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the ammeter has two adjustable contacts so that the valve is opened at one value of current and closed at another. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the contact making ammeter is replaced by a current transformer and rectifier connected to energize the valve solenoid in oposition to a reference voltage. It is also stated that the hydraulic ram may control the speed of the feed belt 12 instead of varying the outlet from the hopper.
