Classes 16 and 146(1) [Also in Group XXV] On a telephone manual switchboard, provision is made for holding a partly completed ticket in position on the desk section opposite the speak key for the call to which the ticket relates, there being for each speak key a gripping device comprising at least one working member held captive between two surfaces diverging in the front and back direction of the switchboard so that a ticket may be inserted by pushing it between the rolling member and one of the two surfaces, removal of the ticket being resisted by the rolling member being pulled in the direction of convergence of the surfaces and thereby exerting a binding action on the ticket. As shown in Fig. 1, the desk section 2 of the switchboard and turret keyboard panel 1 have grip devices 3 opposite each speak key (not shown) comprising two captive balls 4 spaced apart and held captive in slots 11 between diverging surfaces 5, 6. The keyboard panel 1 is shaped to form the surface 6 and is slotted at 11 and a slightly resilient angle member 7 forming the other surface 5, the panel 1 and member 7 being screwed at 9 to a main frame member 8. The surface 5 is slightly lower at the front so that the balls 4 are urged to the gripping position by gravity. A ticket or sheet 13 is shown being inserted and the balls 4 will be pushed backwardly thereby to allow entry of the sheet under the balls, the balls then rolling forward to grip the ticket. As shown in Fig. 3, the grip device 3 comprises a captive soft-iron roller 14 held in a diverging groove 15 between members 7 and 16 of non-metallic, slightly resilient material. The members 7, 16 lie between pole pieces 17, 18 which are permanently polarized by a permanent magnet 19 so that the roller 14 is urged forward to grip a ticket 13 by magnetic attraction. As shown in Fig. 5, the keyboard panel 1 and desk 2 from the diverging surfaces 5, 6 and each gripping device 3 comprises two captive balls 4 each urged forwardly by a light leaf spring 20 mounted on a member 21 by screws 22, the member 21 having a space 23 behind each ball 4 and being cut away at 24 for the reception of the leading edge of a ticket 13. The panel 1 is arranged to have a certain resilience, this resilience, of at least one of the binding surfaces in all the constructions, preventing the binding action of the devices becoming an absolute lock.
