Abstract

Organo esters of polyorthosilicic acid are prepared by the reaction of a small amount of water, silicon tetrachloride and/or a phenol in the liquid phase and in the presence of silica gel, activated clay or Fuller's earth and/or activated carbon, preferably in an amount of 0.2 to 3 per cent. by weight of the reactants. The adsorbent may be added prior to the commencement of the reaction. It is preferable to use activated carbon with or without one of the remaining absorbents.ALSO:Organo esters of orthosilicic and/or polyorthosilicic acids are prepared by the reaction of silicon tetrachloride with an alcohol and/or a phenol in the liquid phase and in the presence of silica gel, activated clay or fuller's earth and/or activated carbon, preferably in an amount of 0.2 to 3 per cent by weight of the reactants. The adsorbent may be added prior to the commencement of the reaction. It is preferable to use activated carbon with or without one of the remaining adsorbents. In the example, tetraphenyl orthosilicate is formed by reacting phenol and silicon tetrachloride in the presence of activated carbon, o-phenyl-phenol is added, and a mixed phenyl, diphenyl orthosilicate is obtained by heating and distilling out phenol. The esters of polyorthosilicic acid are prepared in a similar manner in the presence of a small amount of water.
