713,376. Lifting apparatus for handling invalids. SECHRIST, R. H., and PLYMALE, J. L. May 20, 1952 [Jan. 14, 1952], No.12780/52. Class 78 (3) [Also in Group VI] A device for handling invalids comprises a beam 26 supported on the head and foot of a bed by a vertically adjustable roller 40, supported by a bracket 28, and by a hydraulic jack 30 mounted on a bracket 54; a sleeve 88 adjustable along the beam 26; a transverse rod 100 pivoted on the sleeve 88 for movement in a horizontal plane and an invalid carrying device suspended from the ends of rod 100 by chains 108. The brackets 28, 54 are adapted to hook over the top rail of the head and foot respectively, and are clamped to the vertical bars 24 thereof by bolts 50 and plates 46, 48. As shown the patient is supported by a sling 114, but in a modification (not shown) a rectangular frame, carrying a transverse seat provided with a toilet hole, is suspended from a pair of assemblies 88, 100, 108. The device is also provided with various traction devices (see Group VI) to tension the limbs of a patient, and an adjustable handle 82 to enable him to exercise himself.
