Abstract

712,195. Lifting dogs. KING, Ltd., G. W. Oct. 29, 1952 [Nov. 7, 1951] No. 26077/51. Class 78 (4) A mechanical grab has an upper plate and dependent sleeve enclosing a slidable rod with a cam for actuating grippers, lazy tong linkage being connected to the plate and to the rod and to a hoisting rope, the sleeve being placed in the bore of an article e.g. a paper roll, and by pulling on the hoist rope the cam projects the grippers into engagement with the interior of the bore. A rod 16 is surrounded by a sleeve 15 within a cylindrical outer sleeve 11. The rod 16 is connected to a lazy tong linkage 17, connected to a plate 10 secured to the sleeve 11, and to a hauling cable 14. The sleeve 15 carries pivoted members 19 to which are attached arcuate shoe members 20 with friction surfaces 21. The shoes are forced outwardly to engage the inner surface of a bore of a paper roll or the like into which the sleeve 11 has been inserted by a cam 22 on the rod 16 when the cable 14 is pulled. To allow removal of the device from the bore the shoes are maintained out of engagement by latch members 23 which engage blocks 25 on the rod 16. The latch members are pivoted to brackets 24 within the sleeve 11 and the blocks project through holes in the sleeve 15. The members 23 can be moved by mechanical means or by a solenoid to free the rod 16 for movement. Struts 12 connect the plate 10 to a collar 13 through which the cable passes, the upper part may be enclosed by a sheet metal casing. A guide block or nose 28 may be secured to the end of the rod 16.
