Abstract

711,291. Treating grain. SAFETY CAR HEATING & LIGHTING CO., Inc. Aug. 23, 1951 [Sept. 9, 1950], No. 19941/51. Class 58. [Also in Group II] An apparatus for separating particles from cereal grains by an air stream comprises an annular air channel formed by two concentric members, means for causing the grains to flow in a thin flat stream across an annular air gap formed between the top and bottom of the channel, an air inlet connected to the bottom of the channel, an exhaust conduit connected to the upper end of the channel at one side thereof, and a baffle element connected to one of the members and wholly disposed in the channel between the inlet aperture and the exhaust conduit, the baffle having a portion that is relatively wider than the remainder of the baffle, the wider portion being disposed in the exhaust conduit side of the channel to reduce the air velocity at those portions of the gap underlying the wider portion of the baffle element. In an apparatus in which the partial-separating apparatus is combined with a milling machine as shown grain is fed through inlets 12, 13 controlled by valves 12a, 13a respectively onto a rotor 14 rotatably mounted in a casing 11 and provided in planes passing through its axis with a plurality of blades 16 to impel the grain outwardly against a detachably mounted liner 17 provided with angularly disposed impact surfaces 18 so that broken grains are directed downwardly into an inwardly tapering frustoconical shell 21 and eventually fall down a cone 22 into an air duct 28 at G up which an air flow is drawn, maintained uniform by a baffle 49a of varying thickness mounted in the duct 28, and of sufficient velocity to remove the lighter impurities which are exhausted through a valve controlled exhaust 29 to which is attached the suct'on fan. The grain falls into the upper end of a discharge passage 53, formed as an outer cylindrical shell within which is a concentric shell 54 forming the air inlet for the apparatus and passes down a helical-shaped strip 57 to any suitable discharge conduit 65, Fig. 4 (not shown) for removal. The shells 53, 54 are so arranged in conjunction with an air distributer 36 fixed under the cone 22 that the material falling from C down the passage 28 passes directly into the discharge passage 53 at a point below the entrance of air into the distributer 36 thus preventing any of the grain from passing through the air distributer into the air inlet 54. Specification 686,124, [Group II], is referred to.
