Abstract

1,253,952. Centrifugal separators; upward current classifiers. P. BERNUTAT. 26 Feb., 1970 [1 March, 1969], No. 9311/70. Headings B2H and B2P. An air-flow separator for classifying particulate material comprises a separator chamber 1, a plurality of cyclones 6 distributed around, and in communication with, the chamber 1, and an impeller 2 mounted within the chamber and operable to discharge air and separated fine particles into the cyclones. The chamber 1 is annular, its inner wall being defined by a coaxial duct 16. The cyclones 6 are provided with inlet ducts 5 which are tangential to the impeller 2. Pivotable flaps 7 in the ducts 5 control the flow of air admitted to the cyclones. The cyclones are connected to the bottom of the chamber 1 via central pipes 10 and ducts 11. The velocity and direction of the air entering the chamber 1 from the cyclones may be varied by means of pivotable flaps 14 in the ducts 11 and adjustable vanes 12 at the exit of the ducts 11 respectively. The material to be classified is fed via a pneumatic conveyor duct 21 onto a distributor cone 20 and passes through openings 22 in the duct 16 into the chamber 1. As the material enters the chamber 1 it is met by an upward air vortex created by air induced by the impeller 2 through the ducts 11. Due to this vortex the material is distributed uniformly over the entire cross-section of the chamber and any agglomerates are broken down, the vortex also causing the coarse particles to separate towards the outer wall of the chamber. The coarse particles tall by gravity into a bottom hopper 17 while the fine particles are carried with the upward moving air through the impeller 2 and into the cyclones 6 where they are separated from the air and discharged through delivery spouts 9, the air being recirculated to the chamber 1 via the ducts 11. By setting the flaps 7 differently, the fines obtained from each cyclone may be different as regards grain structure.
