Abstract

1,211,106. Pneumatic separation of solids. KENNEDY VAN SAUN CORP. 4 April, 1968 [18 April, 1967], No. 16186/68. Heading B2H. Finely-divided solid particles carried in a stream of gaseous carrier medium are classified according to size by conducting a main stream of gaseous medium and particles in continuous flow into one side of an expansion chamber 26 of a classifier, causing the stream of particles to flow downwardly and inwardly towards an outlet 20 for relatively coarse particles, passing a number of separate streams of stripping gaseous medium transversely through the downwardly flowing stream of solid particles to remove relatively fine particles therefrom and suspend them in the chamber 26 and removing the suspended fine particles from the top of the chamber in a stream of the gaseous medium. As shown, particles and air are fed via a duct 42 and an inlet 18 into a preliminary separation chamber 24 from which part of the air and fine particles are drawn off through a duct 44 provided with a pivotable control gate 46 to a fine particle outlet duct 22 which may be connected to a fan through cyclone separators. The bulk of the air and particles flow through the chamber 24 into the expansion chamber 26 via a passageway 48 which is controlled by a pivotable gate 62. Secondary air with some fine particles is drawn off from the chamber 24 through ducts 56, 58, 60 controlled by pivotable gates 50, 52, 54 and is discharged through successively lower outlets 61, 59, 57 transversely through the stream of particles flowing downwardly from the passageway 48, thereby to separate the fine particles which are removed with the air through the outlet duct 22 while the coarse particles continue downward and are removed through the outlet 20. The effective volume of the expansion chamber 26 is adjustable by means of a swinging gate 30 fixed to a pivoted shaft 32 operable by a lever on the outside of the classifier by means of a hydraulic piston and cylinder unit. The gate 30 has a rigid section 34 and a swingable section 36 positioned by chains 38. When the gate 30 is moved to the right, the effective size of the chamber 26 is decreased and hence the velocity of the air and the size of the solid particles moving upwardly through the duct 22 are increased. The size of the solid particles through the duct 22 may also be increased by closing off the duct 44.
