Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4) A method of making a valve rocker arm for an internal-combustion engine consists in forming a blank 5 from a length of preformed metal strip 1 having a flat mid-section 2 and rounded edge portions 3 and 4, forming a vertical aperture 13 in the end 7 of the blank and threading said aperture to receive a contacting bearing 19 (Fig. 10), piercing a horizontal aperture 6 in said blank, forming a plurality of notches 9 around the periphery of said horizontal aperture on each side of said blank, inserting a tubular hub member 15 in said horizontal aperture and upsetting said hub member adjacent both sides of the blank to form annular flanges 16 and simultaneously upsetting said hub into the notches on each side of the blank. In operation the blank 5 is stamped from the preformed metal strip 1 and at the same time the aperture 6 is pierced in the blank. The vertical aperture 13 is formed by first pressing indentations 10 and 11 in the rounded end 7 of the blank and then piercing the end through the indentations. Similarly, an oil passageway 18 is formed above the aperture 6 by first making an indentation 12 and then piercing. A tubular bushing or bearing 17 is pressed into the hub member 15. Alternatively, the hub and bushing may comprise a steel tubular member having a coating of bearing material on the inside. The under surface 21 of the rounded end 8 of the rocker arm is flame hardened to resist wear. Specification 528,997 is referred to.
