Abstract

1,224,602. Making valve plugs. ETABS. THEVIGNOT. 13 Jan., 1969 [30 Jan., 1968], No. 1955/69. Heading B3A. [Also in Division F2] A spherical valve plug is made by welding together two identical, truncated hemispheres 1, 2 formed from sheet steel blanks and a steel conduit 3 forming a through-passage of the plug. Each blank is so shaped (Fig. 1, not shown) that each hemisphere 1 formed therefrom by a punch and die includes four sectors 17, 18, 17<SP>1</SP>, 18<SP>1</SP> lying on a great circle 19 of the sphere and two pairs of parallel semicircular openings 11, 12 and 14, 15, which pairs are arranged perpendicular to each other and to the great circle 19. The ends of the conduit 3 are welded at 32 and 35 to the hemispheres 1, 2 which are welded to each other along the adjoining sectors 17, 27; 18<SP>1</SP>, 281; 17<SP>1</SP>, 27<SP>1</SP> and 18, 28. A guide member 4 and a drive member 5 are welded to the conduit 3, the former being provided with a centreing hole 44 and the latter with holes 54, 55 to enable the plug to be handled in known manner. Finally the inner surface of the conduit 3 is reamed and the external surface of the sphere lightly machined.
