Abstract

A ball valve includes a first part (40) and a second part (41) with a tube (42) being sandwiched therebetween. Each of the first and the second parts is a semi-spherical shell and has two diametrically opposed semi-circular recesses (44, 43) defined therein. The first part (40) has a slot (46) defined in its outer periphery. The first part (40) and the second part (41) are connected together to form a ball with two holes respectively defined therein. Each of the holes is defined by a respective pair of opposed semi-circular recesses (44, 43). The tube (42) is received between the first and second parts and disposed between the two holes.

Description

2332501 IMPROVED BALL-TYPE VALVE The present invention relates to a valve
and, more particularly, to an improved ball-type valve composed of two ball halves and a tube which is sandwiched between the two ball halves so as to simplify a manufacturing process thereof.
Figure 1 shows a conventional ball-type valve which is made to be a solid ball 20 having a passage 21 defined therethrough. A notch 22 is defined in an outer periphery of the solid ball 20 so as to cooperate with other parts to rotate the ball valve. However, a process to manufacture the ball valve has the following defects:
1. The ball valve is made by casting molten stainless steel or copper and has a solid configuration. Both stainless steel and copper are expensive as compared with other alternative materials.
2. When the ball valve is formed from casting the molten stainless steel or copper, an outer surface of the ball and an inner periphery defining the passage have to be machined to get the desired dimensions and tolerances. This machining involves two independent processes so that a rate of production is therefore reduced.
3. There will be some blow holes found on the outer surface of the solid ball and the inner periphery defining the passage. If the blow holes are so large that they are difficult to be machined out, a defective semiproduct is inevitably encountered and the ball valve is scrapped.
The present invention intends to provide an improved ball assembly for a ball-type valve to mitigate and/or obviate the above- mentioned problems.
The present invention provides a ball assembly which includes a first part, a second part and a tube disposed between the first and the second part. The first part is a semi-spherical shell and has two first semicircular recesses defined diametrically in opposite with each other. A slot is defined in an outer periphery of the first part.
The second part is a semi-spherical shell and has two second semicircular recesses defined diametrically in opposite with each other. The first part and the second part are jointly connected to each other so as to form a ball with two holes respectively defined therein. Each of the holes is defined by a pair of opposite first and second semi-circular recesses. The tube is snugly received between the two holes.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a ball valve which is made by a simple manufacturing process.
Other objects, advantages, and novel features of the invention will become more apparent from the following detailed description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.
Fig. ball valve; Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of a ball valve of the present invention, and Fig. 3 is an illustrative view to show a manufacturing process of the ball valve of the present invention.
IN THE DRAWINGS 1 is a cross sectional view of a conventional Referring to Figs. 2 and 3, a ball valve in accordance with the present invention generally includes a first part 40, a second part 41 and a tube 42 disposed between the first and the second parts 40, 41. Each of the first and the second parts 40, 41 is manufactured from a stainless steel or copper plate 411 into a semi-spherical shell. The first part 40 has two first semi-circular recesses 44 defined diametrically in opposite with each other and a slot 46 is defined in an outer periphery of the first part 40. The second part 41 has two second semi-circular recesses 43 defined diametrically in opposite with each other. The first part 40 and the second part 41 can be jointly connected to each other by soldering S1 so as to form a ball with two holes respectively defined therein and each of the holes is defined by an opposite pair of the first and second semi-circular recess 44, 43.
The tube 42 is cut from a long tube 421 and snugly received between the first and second parts 40, 41. An outer diameter of the tube 42 corresponds to a diameter of each of the holes so that the tube can be snugly disposed between the two holes.
A sphere shape correcting process S2 and a surface polishing process S3 are performed to let the ball valve to have desired tolerance and configuration.
Therefore, the ball valve of the present invention has a light weight and lower manufacturing cost.
Although the invention has been explained in relation to its preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that many other possible modifications and variations can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention 1 as hereinafter claimed.
