Abstract

710,744. Engine distributing valves. SPENCE ENGINEERING CO., Inc. June 9, 1952, No. 14460/52. Class 122(2) The exhaust period of a steam engine having an inside steam pistou distributing valve 5 is prolonged by means of a radial port or ports located in the valve packing distance ring 16 between the valve inlet and exhaust edges and controlled by a sleeve valve 22 axially slidable with respect to the piston valve, the sleeve valve being resiliently urged to open the ports and acted upon by the cylinder compression to close the ports. The distance ring 16 surrounds the valve spider 15 and carries at each of its ends packing rings 17, 18 respectively controlling steam inlet and exhaust through the main cylinder steam port 9. The distance ring 16 and spider 15 have a plurality of aligned radial ports 19, 2Q respectively controlled by the sleeve valve 22 which is slidable in ari annular groove in the ring 16 and urged in a direction to open the ports by a plurality of springs 25. The end of the sleeve valve adjacent to the inlet packing ring 17 communicates with the outside of the distance ring through a series of radial ports 23. After main exhaust has been cut off by the exhaust packing ring 18 when the piston valve is moving to the right, exhaust still occurs through the ports 19, 20 and continues until port 19 passes the main cylinder port 9. Compression then begins in the main cylinder and just prior to admission is sufficient to overcome the springs 25 to thereby move the sleeve valve 22 and close the ports 19, 20; the valve 22 being maintained in the closed position during the working stroke by the steam pressure in the cylinder. When the port 9 is-again opened to exhaust by the exhaust packing ring clearing the edge of port 9 the pressure behind the sleeve valve is relieved and the valve moved by the springs 25 to open the ports 19, 20. For a double acting engine the other end of the piston valve is similarly arranged.
