Abstract

710,552.. Magnetrons. RAYTHEON MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 26, 1952, No. 21463/52. Class 39(1) A magnetron comprises a hollow conducting cylinder sealed at each end by a disc-shaped cap of conducting material; a tubular magnetic pole piece mounted in or supported by one of the end caps; a cathode mounted on a support extending through the bore of the pole piece; tubular anode members supported by the other end cap in a circular array, each anode member carrying a block of conducting material projecting towards the cathode and each pair of adjacent blocks forming with the anode member and the end cap a quarter-wave line; a header mounted on the second end cap to bring and/or remove coolant fluid for cooling the anode members; and a second magnetic pole piece supported from the second end cap and projecting towards the cathode along the axis. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, the anode members 24 are half a wavelength long and extend from the top cap 11 to the bottom cap 12, and cooling fluid passes through them from an inlet 29 to an outlet 30; anode blocks 26 are attached at their mid-points opposite the cathode 15. The cylinder 10 is of magnetic material and completes the magnetic circuit between the magnetic pole pieces 31, 32. A conductor 33 is attached to one of the anode elements and provides an output to a coaxial line. In a modification, Fig. 2, the anode members 49 are attached to only one end cap 37 and are a quarter wavelength long; an inner tube 55 is provided in each anode element and is connected to a supply header for the cooling liquid which flows from the inlet 56 through the tube 55 and anode members 49 to the outlet 57. The envelope includes a pole piece 44 and a socket 53 for receiving a second pole piece 58, the two pole pieces being connected to a magnet 59.
