Abstract
709,993. Treating molten metals or alloys. BATES, J. S. W. April 6, 1951, No. 8104/51. Classes 72 and 82 (1) A cartridge for treating molten metal with a small amount of an agent. consists of a container of a metal not deleterious. to the metal being treated having a cavity containing the agent, the weight of the charge and container exceeding the weight of an equal volume of the metal being treated, and at least one fuse of a metal soluble in the metal being treated and of such thickness that it wdll be dissolved when the cartridge has sunk to a predetermined level in the bath and not later than the point at which the body of the cartridge has been dissolved to such an extent that it will rise to the surface. As shown, the cartridge may have a body 1 with a cavity 2 the upper part 3 of the cavity being of a larger diameter than the lower. A fuse 4 comprising a disc of metal is placed above the charge 6 in the cavity and the sides 3 pressed inwards to seal the disc in position. A screwed plug may be used as a closure and an indent made in the other end of the body of such depth as to leave a thickness of the body metal to. act as a fuse, Fig. 6 (not shown). In a further modification, Fig. 10, fusible plugs 33, 35, may be fitted in the body and the closure respectively. Examples are given of the body metal and the fuse metal for the treatment of different metals with varying agents. A formula is also included relating the size of the cavity to the total volume'of the cartridge.
