Abstract
709,804. Interfolding paper sheets. STANGEL, A, and GAMBLE, H. Oct. 4, 1951 [Oct. 9, 1950], No. 24568/50. Class 100 (1). [Also in Group VII] A method of folding cigarette paper into V-form for assembly into interleaved packings, comprises the step of forming a tightly pressed pleat so that the middle crease of the pleat sharply defines the folding line, while the outer creases of the pleat are in the reverse direction to the middle crease, the sheet being thereafter fo'ded into open V-form by an oscillating blade. As shown in Fig. 2, a web 3 is fed between two pairs of clamps comprising plates 5, 6 and 7, 8. The plates 5, 7 are oscillated, by a lever 13 in the directions p', thus clamping and releasing the web periodically. A creasing blade 17 is fixed to the plate 5, such that the blade 17 depresses the web, clamped by the plates 7, 8, into a slot between the plates 6 and 8 ; upon withdrawal of the blade 17 the plate 6 is moved by an oscillating lever 11 towards the plate 8, thus forming creases on either side of the fold formed by the blade 17. The creases tend to maintain a sheet 1, cut from the web by a knife 9, in V-form. The sheet 1 is then fed downwards through a slotted plate by an oscillating folding blade, into a grooved interleaving drum 10 provided with suction apertures in known manner. In a modification of the folding apparatus, Fig. 7, the folding blade 23 is hollow, such that compressed air passing through holes 31 and a slit 32 opens the sheet in V-form, the sheet being maintained in V-form, until reaching the interleaving station, by suction apertures in the interleaving drum.
