Classes 83 (2) and 83 (3) Planing. - A process for making guide means and similar parts of machine tools from steel or cast iron is characterized in that the guide is machined to an intermediate form so that when the guide is subjected to a hardening operation the consequent distortion changes the work to its required final form. The distortion resulting from hardening work d having guides e is previously determined by test and then transferred to the guides aa of a grinding, planing or milling machine. The guide surfaces bb of a reciprocating worktable b on the machine are also machined complementary to the guide means aa so that a blade f, or a milling cutter, shapes the guides e of the work to the form of the guides aa as the table reciprocates. Subsequent hardening of the shaped work restores it to its final form.
