Abstract
The Specification describes the preparation of a sulphonated phenol formaldehyde resin suitable for use in emulsion drilling fluids (see Group XXI), by heating 75 grams phenol with 100 grams concentrated sulphuric acid at 100 DEG C. for half an hour. 53.4 grams of 37 per cent. formaldehyde in 152 c.c. water are then added dropwise at 85 DEG C. over half an hour and the mixture, after addition of 100 c.c. water, heated at 95 DEG C. for 40 minutes. Small quantities of formaldehyde are then added, with a long period of heating after each addition, until the viscosity reaches 150 c.p. whereupon the reaction is stopped by adding phenol. The resulting solution is neutralized with 40 per cent. caustic soda. The Specification refers also to the use of phenols containing substituents such as CH3, C2H5 and Cl in the meta position, and to ammonium, calcium, lithium and potassium hydroxides for neutralizing the final product.
