Abstract
Metallic surfaces, floors, sinks &c. are cleaned by applying cyanamide dihydrochloride thereto in the presence of water. Hydrolysis to hydrochloric acid and cyanamide takes place, both compounds having a dissolving power for rust &c. The cyanamide dihydrochloride may be mixed with an abrasive or a degreasing agent. Abrasives specified comprise infusorial earth, Fuller's earth, wood ash and powdered silica. The preferred degreasing agent is ethyl acetate. The cyanamide dihydrochloride may be prepared by passing gaseous hydrochloric acid into ethyl acetate containing in solution free cyanamide, all in suitable proportions, while cooling the solution to keep it below 50 DEG C. The salt precipitates and after filtering off may be dried ready for use. The solvent wetting the cyanamide dihydrochloride is preferably retained, a paste being formed.
