[Also in Groups XVII and XXX] A method of sampling for checking purposes the performance of an automatic machine which performs repetitively an operation upon a succession of articles passing through it (e.g. filling a succession of containers), comprises introducing into the succession of articles entering the machine an article which is standard in the sense that, while conforming to some predetermined specification of characteristics compatible with the successful performance upon it by the machine of the operation of which the accuracy is to be checked, it differs from the other articles being dealt with in some detectable characteristic, performing upon that article in its turn at least the operation of which the accuracy it to be checked (e.g. filling), and subsequently detecting the presence of said article in and procuring its withdrawal from said succession by virtue of its characteristic feature. Vials to be filled (see Group XVII) are fed in succession past filing devices 8, 9, a stoppering head 10 and a rejection pusher 11 to a delivery pusher. Included among the vials fed to the machine is a " standard container in the form of a plain cylinder, the other vials having necks and the machine being arranged to fill such " standard " container in the same manner as the vials but to reject it after filling by means of the rejection pusher 11 so that the amount of material in the container can be checked. For this purpose and to ensure that the " standard " container is not stoppered and that imperfect vials are rejected, not filled or stoppered, detector devices 12, 13, 14 are provided to control the filling, stoppering and rejection means. The detector 12 comprises vertically reciprocable member carrying a neck gauge 23 having a plug to enter the neck and a ring to gauge the outside diameter of the neck. A cam member 27 on the gauge 23 co-operating with a rocker arm 28 is arranged so that if the neck is of correct size a switch 29 is opened but if not, or if no vial is present, the switch is closed ; a " standard " container engages an annular abutment on the gauge to open the switch 29.
