Abstract

707,351. Coke-oven doors. KOPPERS GES., H. June 9, 1952, No. 14517/52. Class 55 (1) Apparatus for compressing coke oven door closure springs to permit unlatching comprises a coupling device engaging a part supporting the springs and pressure-applying means exerting a thrust between a mounting for the coupling device and the springs such that the thrust at one side compresses the springs against a counterthrust exerted by the coupling device in which this reaction also is absorbed. Unlatching mechanism for a coke oven door 1 is connected to operating gear 2 by a carrier 9 and spaced springs 10. Bell crank levers 13 pivoted to brackets 11 secure to the carrier have a pin 15 at the end of one arm 14 disposed between a thrust member 16 and one half 17 of a pressure medium housing, the other half 18 carrying a shaft 21 on which part 17, member 16 and carrier 9 are displaceably mounted, the carrier being urged against an adjustable stop nut 22 at the end of the shaft by a spring 23 interposed between carrier and thrust member. A rubber &c. envelope 24 lining the pressure chamber 19 is clamped at its outer margin between part 17 and a sealing ring 26, ring 25 being interposed between the two edges of the envelope. When the unlatching mechanism is advanced a conical recess 29 in part 18 is applied against the head 30 of the latch bolt and carrier 9 is pushed along shaft 21 causing levers 13 to rock about their pivots so that pins 27 at their forward ends enter a groove 28 between an attachment plate 3 and a housing for springs 8 which press against the latch 6 when the door is closed. Compressed air &c. is now admitted to chamber 19 to compress springs 8 so as to release their pressure on the latch when can then be swung off its hooks. In another embodiment the latch bolt is not axially displaceable, the springs being compressed by a surrounding thrust ring and bush on which the latch is rockably mounted. This thrust is effected by a cylindrical extension of housing 18 at the same time as a collar on the latch bolt is engaged by claw levers pivotably mounted on the front end of shaft 21 which in this construction is rigidly connected to the rear half 17 of the pressure housing. A latch mechanism is provided at both upper and lower parts of each door, the lower part advantageously being sealed first as by including a pressure-delay valve in the pressure medium line between the two mechanisms.
