Class 55 (1) In latch releasing means for coke oven doors as described in the parent Specification, the pressure-applying means for compressing the closure springs without transmitting a counterthrust to the door or the support for the pressureapplying means is operated mechanically by rotary or lever action. In the spring-release mechanism shown, the latch 6 is rockably mounted on a bush 32 surrounding a rigid latch bolt 5 and the springs 8 are compressed by thrust on the bush and a plate 31 imparted by a cylindrical element 33 against the action of a return spring 42 whilst coupling claws 13 pivotably mounted at the end of a shaft 21 are engaged in a groove 50 in the latch bolt. The operating device shown comprises a toothed plate 51 loosely mounted on shaft 21 against element 33 with inclined faces 52 and co-operating with similar faces on a plate 53 so that when plate 51 is caused to rotate by a spur wheel 54 a thrust is imparted to element 33. Extensions 63 of elements 33, 53 pass through a guide 64 in the carrier frame 2 to prevent rotation. In another embodiment a pair of levers articulated at opposed pivot points at each side of an annular part 18 of element 33 and of plate 53 are pivoted together scissors-fashion and their outer ends co-operate with eccentrics to force element 33 forwards to compress the closure springs.
