Abstract

692,297. Coke oven doors. KOPPERS GES., H. Nov. 30, 1951 [Nov. 30, 1950], No. 28179/51. Addition to 689,056. Class 55(i) The coke-oven door latching-means of the parent Specification are modified so that if the springs are removed and the latch reversed, the latching means are manually operable if this becomes necessary. In the drawing, Fig. 1, lying to the right of the centre line shows the means arranged for spring-closing, whilst Fig. 2, lying to the left of the line, shows the latch 10 reversed and the spring omitted. A bearing 11 is secured within a flange 5 on the door plate 4 and is screwed to receive the latch screw 12 which is held against rotation in the bearing 11. A housing 23 is secured to the bearing 11, the walls of the housing having recesses which are engaged by ears 26 on a plate 20 which conveys the thrust of the springs 22 to the latch 10. A nut 14, having a squared or like end 16 to be engaged by a manually operable key or by the coupling of the mechanical latching means, has a shoulder 15 which is in thrust-transmitting opposition to a shoulder 18 on a bush 17 screwed into the latch 10. In Fig. 1, the thrust is applied, by turning the nut, through a ball bearing 19 to the compression plate 20 which is secured by screws 21 to the bush 17 which is thereby held against rotation. When the pressure of the latch has been released from the hooks 9, the subsequent disengagement of the latch, by turning it on the screwed bush 17, moves it slightly away from the oven. This movement relieves the latch from pressure against the flange 5 if the nut 14 has been excessively turned. When manual operation of the latch is required, the plate 20 is transferred to the other side of the latch which is reversed on the nut 14, the springs having been removed. The plate 20 again engages recesses in the housing 23 and the sealing pressure on the door is transmitted through the screw 12, by unscrewing the nut 14, against the ball bearing 19 and the shoulder 18.
