706,220. Sharpening pointed instruments. LOWY, F. Aug. 21, 1952 [Sept. 24, 1951], No. 22289/51. Class 60 An apparatus for sharpening a pointed instrument, such as a pin, needle, bradawl or dart, consists of a body portion 3, of abrasive stone, Fig. 3, formed with at least one conical cavity 2 having an abrasive surface which is truly conical and circumferentially continuous, so that the point of the instrument may be gyrated in contact with it. The body may be made from any desired abrasive mix, and to a circular, square, triangular, pentagonal or other cross sectional shape. The cavity may or may not extend through the body and two co-axial cavities entering the body from opposite sides may be provided. A number of cavities 25 maybe provided in a body formed as a many-sided figure as shown in Fig. 11. The cavities may differ in respect of their included angle and the grade of abrasive used. The Provisional Specification states that the body may be made from steel with a grooved cavity or, alternatively, from plastic or other material, the cavity being sprayed with abrasive material or provided with a removable abrasive liner, and that the cavity may have a paraboloidal or hyperboloidal shape.
