Class 80 (1) A housing for a countershaft g e a r unit which may be readily adapted to contain one, two, three or four stages of reduction gearing comprises two pairs of shaft-supporting plates 17, 24 and 40, 15, and a cover 10 which is welded to a base 12 and to end walls 14. 15. The wall 14 has a shouldered aperture closed by a removable disc 17 carrying three lugs 26 to which is bolted the plate 24, locating pins 27 being provided, and the output shaft 19 and a countershaft 30 are mounted in bearings in the said disc and plate and thus comprise a sub-assembly removable from the housing 10. The plate 40 has integral end supports welded to the wall 15 and the input shaft 37 is mounted in bearings in the said plate and wall. In the two stage reduction gear shown in Fig. 1, the shaft 37 carries a pinion 36 engaging a gear 35 attached to the shaft 30 which is formed as a pinion engaging a gear 28 on the output shaft 19. The reduction ratio may be varied by changing gears 35, 36. A driving electric motor 56 may be mounted on a bracket bolted to the wall 15 and be flexibly coupled to the shaft 37. Alternatively, Fig. 10 (not shown), the motor'may be flanged and directly bolted to the wall 15, an annular channel in the wall 15 receiving an annular rib on the motor to centre the latter. In this arrangement the gear 36 is keyed on a hollow stub shaft which may be shrunk on to the motor shaft. To provide a three or a four stage gear the pinion 36 is omitted and the plate 40 and wall 15 are additionally bored to receive bearings for one, or two countershafts carrying pinions and gears located between the plate and wall and driven by a pinion on the shaft 37. The gear 35 is then engaged by a pinion on one of these countershafts. To provide a single stage reduction gear the shaft 19 and gear 28 are omitted and the shaft 30 is extended beyond the disc 17 to become the output shaft.
