Abstract

705,745. Accelerometers; counting-apparatus. PRINTING, PACKAGING & ALLIED TRADES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Jan. 25, 1952 [Jan. 30, 1951], No. 2354/51. Classes 106 (1) and 106 (3) Shock registering apparatus comprises a counter mechanism, a pawl and ratchet device for actuating said counter mechanism, and biasing means for normally maintaining the pawl and ratchet against movement, all said members being mounted in a frame contained in a housing filled with damping liquid to damp out any undesired operation of the pawl and ratchet device, and hence prevent undesired actuation of the counter mechanism, the arrangement being such that on physical shock being imparted to the apparatus, the shock overcomes the bias and causes the pawl and ratchet device to move to actuate the counter mechanism. The first wheel of the counter 2, Figs. 1 and 2, is fixed to a ratchet wheel 4 the teeth of which are engaged by a pawl 5 carried by the free end 6<SP>1</SP> of a flap 6 fixed to a frame 3 and biased by a spring 7. The wheel 4 is normally prevented from forward rotation by a detent finger 8 and from reverse rotation by a detent 9. The counter wheels are covered by an apertured frame 11. The whole mechanism is housed in a housing 10 containing a damping liquid such as oil and closed by a screw cap 13 having a window 14. When the housing 10 receives a shock sufficient to cause movement of the end 6<SP>1</SP> of the flap 6 the pawl 5 steps-on the ratchet 4. Several registering mechanisms each made responsive, by varying the force of spring 7, the weight of the flap 6 or the viscosity of the damping liquid, to shocks of different magnitude may be arranged in one housing. In an alternative form, not shown, the counter is mounted in a block floatingly slidable, against the pressure of a spring, in a frame to which the pawl is fixed.
