Abstract

972, 826. Accelerometers. L. BOLKOW, [trading as BOLKOW ENTWICKLUNGER K.G.]. July 28, 1961 [July 28, 1960], No. 27457/61. Heading G1K. An accelerometer comprises a pendulum 2 which is angularly deflected about its pivot 3 against the action of a spring 4 in response to translatory accelerations of the platform 1 on which it is pivoted to supply a measured value of this acceleration, the pendulum 2 being so constructed and mounted that any rotational accelerations about a preferred axis X around which the platform can rotate have no influence on the measured value. This is achieved by making the moment of inertia of the pendulum about its pivot 3 equal to the product of its total mass, the distance of its centre of gravity 5 from the pivot 3 and the distance of the pivot 5 from the axis X. In the embodiment shown the pendulum is pivoted by means of a torsion rod 5 of cross-shaped section which is rigidly clamped at each end and has considerable bending resistance but small torsional stiffness. In a modification the torsion rod is clamped at one end only and carries the pendulum mass at its other end.
