Abstract

704,947. Spindle braking mechanism SCRAGG & SONS, Ltd.. E., and FINDLOW, E. April 4, 1951 [Jan. 19, 1950], No. 1391/50. Class 120(2) [Also in Group XXXIV] A textile spindle assembly of the kind in which the spindle is rotatably mounted in a support pivoted to the machine frame so that said support can be pivoted alternatively to position the spindle out of engagement with an endless driving belt and into engagement with a brake, or out of-engagement with the brake and into engagement with the driving belt, has the pivoted support provided with a manipulating handle attached thereto and adapted to engage the machine frame or a bracket thereon when the spindle is moved out of engagement with the driving belt to retain the spindle in a position clear of the brake. As shown, a bracket 5 is secured to a spindle rail 6 by bolts 7 and has an extending arm 8 in one with it and also a hollow vertical member 9 which acts as a socket for a rod 10 having mounted en it an arm 11 terminating in a ring 12 in which the mounting 13 for the spindle bolster is secured. The spindle 14 has a whorl 15 which when the spindle is running is pressed against an endless belt 16 under the action of a spring 17. On the arm 11 is a pivotally mounted lever 18 movable between two lugs 19 and 20 and normally pulled upwards by a spring 21. The arm 8 is provided with a lug 22 projecting towards the lug 19, a gap 23 on its underside and a braking surface 24 at its end. To stop the rotation of the spindle, lever 18 is pulled to the right, in Fig. 1, this swings the arm 11 around until the' whorl 15 contacts the braking surface 24, the lever 18 slides down the inclined face- 25 of arm 8 and enters the gap 23 where, due to the pull of the spring 21 it is retained. The length of gap 23 is sufficient to permit the whorl 15 to move clear of the braking surface 24 under the action of spring 17 when rotation of the spindle has. ceased.
