Abstract

Means for braking a spinning &c. spindle, comprises a stationary assembly, 11 Fig. 2 (not shown), for supporting the spindle, on which assembly an annulus 22 is slidably and rotatably mounted; the annulus has cam-means 25 which, when the annulus is rotated, co-operate with cam-means 26 in the assembly to raise the annulus to engage a flange 19 of the wharve and lift it into engagement with a braking surface 21 on the assembly. The assembly 11 comprises a bolster with a nut 15 which draws a flange 12 into engagement with the base of a housing 20 resting on the rail 14. The braking surface 21 is pivoted on an adjustable cap 21 which serves to prevent the whorl and spindle from being displaced upwardly. The cam-means 26 are on a plate 27 secured to the base of the housing by springs 28. To apply the brake, a handle 23 is rotated in the direction in which the spindle rotates so that the driving-torque transmitted through flange 19 assists the braking-action; this action is also assisted by the springs 28 acting through plate 27.
