Abstract

704,253. Heating liquids by direct contact with steam; temperature-responsive actuating-elements. MIDLAND INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 13, 1952 [Feb. 13, 1951], No. 3430/51. Classes 64(1) and 64(2) [Also in Group XXIX] A temperature-controlled valve for a water heater comprises a chamber 11 with water inlet and discharge ports 15, 16 respectively, connected to a tank 14 so that water can circulate from the port 15 through the chamber to port 16, and a thermal element 20 responsive to the temperature of the circulating water and connected to a closure member 23 coacting with a seat 24 to control the admission to the chamber of steam to maintain the temperature of the water in the tank at a predetermined value. The chamber is divided by a partition 32 having a tube 35 attached thereto to carry the steam into the discharge port to aid circulation and prevent the steam acting directly on the element 20. The steam is supplied through a non-return valve 29. Hot water drawn from the tank is replaced by cold' water through an inlet 31 and incoming water impinges on the element 20 to cause its. immediate response. The thermal element is made of U-shaped bimetal strips 22 joined at adjacent ends. The closure member may be of the type described in Specification 577,025.
