Class 80 (1) A rigid or jointed belt fastener is secured to each end of a driving belt by a single bolt or rivet which passes through the loops of a hank of cotton or other threads forming the core of the belt, the loops being held open during manufacture of the belt by pins b, Fig. 1. The threads may be impregnated with rubber or plastic material and the hank may be approximately equal to or twice the length of the belt, being, in the latter case, doubled on itself before insertion of the pins b. The ends of the shank are then held together and the hank is spirally wrapped or braided with threads which may be rubber or plastic impregnated, thus forming an endless ring which, when wrapping is completed, is severed between the pins b. The belt is then moulded to the desired cross-section, the belt ends preferably being compressed to form a recess to receive a belt-fastening plate d, Fig. 4, which is secured by single bolts e passing through the holes left by the pins b. A jointed fastener, for use with small pulleys comprises interengaging hooked spring steel plates g, h, Fig. 5, the plate h having a knife edge to engage the wider plate g which is forked to provide curved fingers preventing lateral displacements.
