Abstract

703,353. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. LAIDLAW, A. B. S., and EADIE, G. P. April 27, 1951 [Jan. 27, 1950], No. 2251/50. Class 135 Means for regulating' the supply of air to a furnace comprises: pressure responsive members respectively connected to the fuel and air systems; actuating means for varying the air supply corresponding to the supply of fuel; and relay mechanism controlling the motive power to the actuating means including a rotatable element connected to the pressure responsive member in the fuel system and formed with a portion whose curvature is dependent on a predetermined relation between the air and fuel pressures, and means co-operating with the curved portion and connected to the pressure responsive member in the air system. The supply of combustion air to a furnace burning liquid or gaseous fuel from a ring main at 01, 02 is controlled automatically by a piston 4 which adjusts the steam valve V of a motor driving a fan F. Pressure fluid is supplied at 10, Fig. 2, to each side of a relay double-acting piston or diaphragm 14, 15, connected to two jets 12, 13, the outlets from which are controlled by a law plate 16 carrying a slot or cam 26. The jets are moved by a diaphragm 22 responsive to the fan outlet pressure at 24 while the plate is rotated by a diaphragm 18 responsive to the pressure of the fuel at 20 in the return pipe R to the fuel pump. The piston 14, 15, actuates a valve 8 by which fluid pressure supplied at 9 actuates the piston 4. The fuel return flow is regulated by an automatic pressure valve A in the return pipe responsive to boiler pressure or temperature. In a modification the boiler pressure or temperature acts through an air pressure controller, the diaphragm 22 is responsive to pressure in the furnace and the piston 4 actuates dampers in the furnace exhaust. The slot 26 and diaphragm 22 may move a lever and cam for operating flaps controlling the jets. The draught regulator may be actuated by electric motors controlled by an electric contact controller.
