703,301. Tearing paper. EGRY, Ltd. Oct. 24, 1949 [Oct. 26, 1948],' No. 842/52. Divided out of 703,237. Class 31 (1) Apparatus for. separating intermittentlyfed webs of paper or the like into lengths by tearing along lines of perforations extending transversely of the webs comprises a support 1, Fig. 1, over which the web 2 is fed to position a line of perforations along or adjacent and parallel to one edge thereof, means 21 for clamping a portion of the web to the edge of the support inwardly of the line of perforations while the web is stationary between feed steps, a pair of relatively-movable members 25, 26, Fig. 2, to grip opposite faces of the web outwardly of the edge of the support 1 while the web is clamped, and means 30 for actuating the members 25, 26 to tear the web along the line of perforations starting at one edge thereof. As shown, the rod 30 connected to the member 25 is holding the members 25, 26 apart against the influence of a spring 29 that, upon downward movement of the rod, pivots the members together so that bars 27, 28 thereon grip the web. Continued downward movement of the rod 30, which may be connected to a means for feeding the web, swings both members 25, 26 about their pivot 24 to effect tearing, a projection 32 of the member 26 thus moving out of engagement with the support. The rod 30 is attached to a parallel rod 31, Fig. 1, that acts on the clamping means 21 against the influence of a spring 23 in tension, the means 21 being mounted on a pivot 20 above the support 1.
