Class 78 (1) A mechanism for discharging articles from a conveyer such as a belt conveyer, comprises a framework supporting at least one article receiving member and releasable means for locking the member or each member in turn in a loading position over the conveyer, the means being released by the article when it has been received by the member to allow the latter and the article to be moved into a position in which the article is discharged from the conveyer and the member. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement for discharging unfired green bricks from a conveyer belt 7 comprising article receiving members 1 secured to arms 2 mounted on a central member 3 rotatable about a spindle 4 supported between a bracket 5 and a base 6. The end wall 12 of each member 1 has a tubular extension 13 in which slides a plunger 14 controlled by a compression spring 17 engaging the wall and the plunger head 15, the plunger head carrying a buffer plate 16. The initial position of the plate 16 is selected so that a brick will protrude slightly from the open end of the member 1. This member 1 is normally locked in its loading position by a lever 18, pivotally mounted at 20, having a hookshaped arm 19 engaging a catch 24 secured to the bracket 5. A member 26 slidable in a sleeve 27 secured to the bracket 5 prevents the arm 19 bouncing off the catch 24 when a member 1 reaches the loading position. When a brick moves into the member 1, it engages the buffer plate 16 and through a link 22 disengages the arm 19 from the catch 24 whereby the member 1 rotates clockwise to a position above a shoot 6a where the brick being only partially supported by the belt, overbalances and slides down the shoot. At the same time, another member 1 has been brought into a loading position in which it is locked, to be unlocked eventually by the next brick on the belt 7. When the bricks are placed in rows on the belt, a number of discharge mechanisms are arranged along the length of the belt, each to discharge bricks from a particular row.
