Abstract

702,569. Drilling brush-stocks. CARLSON TOOL & MACHINE CO. Oct. 25, 1951 [Nov. 10, 1950], No. 24959/51. Class 83 (3). [Also in Groups XXIII and XXX] A drilling machine for use in brush making comprises a conveyer to which brush backs are automatically fed and moving in a closed path through a drilling station and a tufting station the conveyer being supported on a carrier mounted for movement relative to the drilling and tufting stations and the automatic feeder being mounted on the carrier to move therewith. In the machine shown, which is for making tooth brushes, conventional drilling and tufting mechanisms (not described), operate simultaneously and the conveyer is moved bodily after each operation of the drill and tufter to move the brush back so that three rows of holes are drilled in one back and the holes in another back are successively tufted. The conveyer, Figs. 1 and 3, comprises a frame 30 carrying two sprockets 37, 38 carrying an endless chain with projecting jaws 47a, 47c. The brush backs automatically drop, or are pneumatically inserted endwise, Fig. 6 (not shown), from a hopper 32 between the jaws which close when the line of travel of the conveyer straightens, resilient inserts 62 serving to grip the backs firmly. The jaws open when the chain passes over the second sprocket and the brush backs fall into a chute 33. The portions 40, Fig. 10, of the jaws are provided with tongues which slide in guides 45, 46 in the frame. To present new brush backs to the drill and tufter the conveyer belt is periodically moved rapidly forward by a pneumatic ram 70, Fig. 3, through a ratchet and pawl 72, 74, the amount of travel being determined by the length of the adjustable piston-rod 71 and limited by a second ratchet and pawl 81, 87. Compression springs 101, 102 cushion the blow. The conveyer frame is mounted on two lateral slides 115, 116 and a longitudinal slide 100, Fig. 10, and a nose 160 is provided which rides on a cam 161 and so determines the depth of penetration of the drill and tufters. Further cams intermittently move the conveyer frame on the slides so that the brush backs are moved to present a fresh part of the back to the drill and tufter. Cams 150, Fig. 10, and 2, 8 and 9 (not shown), also operate the valve of the ram 70 and the brush-back inserting-ram where provided.
