This invention relates to brush making machines and has reference to brush stock filling machines such as of the type wherein at each operation a knot of bristles is picked by a picker from storage and transferred to a nozzle through which it is carried forward together with a staple and forced into the previously drilled brush stock or back.
In certain cases it is necessary to change the length or material of the bristles and the object of the invention is to provide a brush making machine with a bristle feeding mechanism so arranged that a knot of bristles may be taken selectively from alternative 5 storages to which the different bristles are fed in the usual manner.
The present invention comprises an automatic bristle or like feeding device for a machine having filler nozzle mechanism and for use in the manufacture of brushes hav ing bristles or like of difierent material or length in different parts of the brush, wherein the knots of the different kinds of bristles are fed in succession or in any desired sequence into the respective holes in the same brush stock in a single machine.
In the preferred form of the apparatus each kind of bristle or the like is fed through a separate trough or channel to picker or knotter mechanism for transferring a knot to a filler nozzle, and the selection of the differentkinds of bristles to form the respec tive knots is effected automatically in any desired pre-arranged sequencewhich may be changed when desired-by cam or equivalent mechanism operated by the machine. In some forms of the apparatus automatic shutter mechanism is provided to close either trough or channel while the other is delivering bristles or the like to the knotter or picker mechanism.
The picker preferably consists of a rocking member rocked by link mechanism from a continuously moving shaft of the machine and having a circular edge in which is formed a. knot forming groove moving transversely to the bristles, and of which the periphery bears against spring pressed surfaces at the side of each bristle feeding trough so that the knot forming groove will be closed while passing from the bristle feeding trough to the filler nozzle.
A further feature of the invention comprises an automatic bristle or like feeding device for a brush stock filling machine, having a picker or knot-ter formed by a transverse groove in the circular periphery of a quadrant member rocked continuously to and fro across the open ends of two bristle feeding troughs provided with shutter mechanism adapted to close one trough while opening the other the picker or knotter being arranged to collect and carry a knot of bristles from one trough under the shutter of the other trough to the filling noze5 zle by cam and lever mechanism operated by a power shaft of the machine which also operates the shutter mechanism intermittently by ratchet mechanism.
A manner of carrying out the invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings in which Fig. l is a plan of the portion of a brush filling machine showing the main elements of the invention, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a portion of Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 a front elevation of Fig. 2.
In these drawings a is a continuously driven power shaft of the machine, and on the shaft w is fixed a cam al which reciprocates a lever (43 carrying a roller (12 running in the groove of the cam and pivoted at a4. The lever a3 is connected at its upper end by a universal joint a5 to a rod 652. The end of the rod (Z2 is connected by a universal joint (Z3 to an arm (Z1.
The arm all is fixed on the lower end of a vertical shaft a rocking in bearings in the standard 72, of the machine. On the upper end of the shaft 0 is fixed a lever 03 carrying a quadrant member 7 having a circular pe- 9o riphery in which is formed agroove fl which comprises the picker or knotter.
Leading to the periphery of the quadrant member f are two parallel troughs or channels hi and 702 having side walls 708, 104:, and 705 and each adapted to receive different kinds of bristles or the like standing upright and pushed towards the quadrant members f by means of pins 106 and 707. The pin 706 is mounted in a slide 768 adapted to move in a slot 709 provided in the wall 705 while the other end of the pin 706 slides in a groove 7010 provided in the wall 704. The pin 706 is by means of a pin 7011 extending from the slide 708 pulled in a direction to feed the bristles to the circular periphery of the picker carrying quadrant member f by means of a cable 7012 which passes over pulleys 7013 and 7014 and carries at its end a weight 7015.
The bristle feeding pin 707 is provided with duplicate feeding mechanism for feeding the bristles in the trough or channel 701 against the circular periphery of the picker of the quadrant f.
The above apparatus is applied to brush stock filling mechanism of which m isthe filler nozzle and m3 the stock holder, and during the reciprocation of the quadrant member f by the cam a1 the groove f1 forming the picker or knotter is moved across the ends of the troughs 701 or 702 and carries with it a collected knot of bristles to the centre of the nozzle shaft ml, the usual slot 0223 being provided in the side of ml in the usual manner,
In order to close either the bristles feeding troughs 701 or while the other is feeding bristles, shutter mechanism is provided consisting of two oppositely disposed fingers a1 and a2 curved on their inner faces to en gage the circular periphery of the quadrant member f containing the picker or knotter groove f1, and are held against such surface by springs 72?) and a l respectively. The fingels a1 and n2 are supported in grooves in detachable blocks 915 and 126 respectively, and these blocks are also arranged to bear against the periphery of the quadrant member The block 016 is pivoted to. the wall 703 by a pin 17,? and is turned about this pivot against the circular surface of the quadrant member 7" by means of a spring n8.
The shutter fingers a1 and 122 have pivot pins 229 and n10 which run in curved grooves 12-11 and n12 in the blocks a5 and n6 respectively. These pivot pins also connect the fingers a1 and 012 to a quadrant member 6 having a boss 05 loosely surrounding the shaft 0 and on the lower end of the boss 65 is provided an arm 61 connected by a universal joint 66 to the end of a lever 02 pivoted at e3 to the standard 72, of the machine. At a point between the ends thereof the lever 02 is connected by a universal joint 026 to the end of a rod 04. The other end of the rod eat is connected by a universal joint 67 to the upper end of a lever 08 pivoted at 69 to the standard of the machine and carrying at a point intermediate its ends a roller e10 adapted to run in a groove 011 in a cam e12 fixed on a shaft 013. The shaft 613 is rotated intermittently by a ratchet wheel 61% of which the teeth are engaged by a pawl e15 carried by an arm e16 loosely mounted on the shaft 613 the free end of the arm 616 being also linked by a rod 617 to the end of a lever e18 pivoted at 019 to the standard of the machine and carrying at an intermediate point a roller e20 held by a spring 622 in engagement with an eccentric e21 carried by the cam a1.
During the rotation of the shaft (1 the eccentric e21 reciprocates the pawl 015 and so rotates the cam e12 intermittently, and the cam e12 reciprocates the lever 68 and rod 04 and thereby the lever 62 which reciprocates the arm 01 and thereby the quadrant e carrying the shutter fingers ml and 022.
At one end of the movement of the quadrant 0 the shutter finger n1 prevents bristles moving from the trough 702 into the picker or knotter groove f1 in the quadrant member 7, so that the picker or knotter groove fl will only carry bristles from the trough 701 into the recess m8 of the filler nozzle m, and at the other end of the movement of the quadrant e, the shutter finger n1 moves away from the trough 702 while the shutter finger n2 moves across the trough 701 so that bristles from the trough 702 will be taken up by the picker or knotter groove f1 and so be carried by the quadrant member f under the shutter finger 712 into the groove m3 of the filler nozzle m.
To ensure the closure of the picker or knotter groove f1 while carrying a knot of bristles from the trough 702 past the division wall 704 of the troughs, a shoe 7016 is pressed by a spring 7017 into engagement with the circular periphery of the quadrant f, and for a similar purpose and in a similar manner the block n6 is pressed against the quadrant f.
The reciprocating movement of the shutter carrying quadrant e is limited by adjustable stops sl and s2.
Machines filter with dual bristle feeding arrangements according to my invention will have the manifest advantage that brushes such as scrubbing brushes where the body of the brush has bristles shorter than those at the ends, can be filled on the same machine or brushes with different lengths or qualities of bristles can be filled on the same machine. What I claim and desire to claim by Letters Patent is 1. An automatic bristle feeding device for feeding bristles to the filler nozzle of a brush stock filling machine, comprising two troughs each containing a different kind of bristle, means for feeding the bristles along to the ends of the troughs, a single means for conveying a knot of bristles from the end of either trough to the filler nozzle, a trough closing shutter for each trough, means for operating both shutters simultaneously across the ends of the troughs, the shutters being operatively connected together so that as one opens one trough the other closes the other trough.
2. An automatic bristle feeding device for feeding bristles to the filler nozzle of a brush stock filling machine, comprising two troughs, each containing a different kind of bristle, means for feeding the bristles along to the ends of the troughs, a quadrant memher having on its peripheral surface a single knotter groove, a rocking lever carrying the quadrant, means for rocking the lever to convey the knots from the trough to the filler nozzle, two trough closing shutters, a quadrant member carrying both shutters, means for rocking the quadrant member, the axis of the rocking lever and that of the quadrant being coincidentand means for rocking the quadrant in timed relationship to that operating the lever.
3. An automatic bristle feeding device for feeding bristles to the filler nozzle of a brush stock filling machine, comprising two troughs each containing a different kind of bristle, means for feeding the bristles along to the ends of the troughs, a single means for conveying a knot of bristles from the end of either trough to the filler nozzle, two trough closing shutters, a quadrant member carrying both shutters, adjustable stops, and means for rocking the quadrant member between the stops, in timed relationship to the means for conveying a knot of bristles from a trough to the filler nozzle.
4. An automatic bristle feeding device for feeding bristles to the filler nozzle of a brush stock filling machine, comprising two troughs each containing a different kind of bristle, means for feeding the bristles along to the ends of the troughs, a single means for conveying a knot of bristles from the end of either trough to the filler nozzle, two trough closing shutters, a quadrant member, each shutter having a curved slot concentric with the quadrant member, a pin fixed in each opposite end of the quadrant and extending freely through the curved grooves in the shutters, means for guiding the shutters in a curved path, and means for rocking the quadrant in timed relationship to the means for conveying a knot of bristles from a trough to the filler nozzle.
5. An automatic bristle feeding device for feeding bristles to the filler nozzle of a brush stock filling machine, and comprising two troughs each containing a difierent kind of bristle, means for feeding the bristles along to the ends of the troughs, a quadrant member having on its peripheral surface a single knotter groove, a rocking lever carrying the quadrant, a means for rocking the lever to convey the knots from the troughs to the filler nozzle, two trough closing shutters, curved surfaces formed on the shutters concentric with and pressed by means of springs against the periphery of the quadrant member carrying the simple knotter groove, a quadrant member carrying both shutters, means for rocking the quadrant member, the axis of the rocking lever and that of the quadrant member being coincident, and means for rocking the quadrant in timed relationship to that operating the lever.
6. An automatic bristle feeding device for feeding bristles to the filler nozzle of a brush stock filling machine, comprising two troughs each containing a different kind of bristle, means for feeding the bristles along to the ends of the troughs, a quadrant member having on its peripheral surface a single knotter groove, a rocking lever carrying the quadrant, cam lever and link mechanism rocking the lever, a trough end closing shutter for each trough, a quadrant member carrying both shutters, cam lever and link mechanism rocking the quadrant, the cams being timed to operate the quadrant operating link and lever mechanism in timed relationship to that of the lever operating link and lever mechanism so that when one groove is open the other is simultaneously closed in the desired sequence.
7 An automatic bristle feeding device for feeding bristles to the filler nozzle of a brush stock filling machine, embodying therein two open ended troughs, each adapted to contain a different kind of bristle, a member having on its perimeter a single knotter groove, means for reciprocating said member across and closely adjacent the open end of both troughs, shutters for said troughs respectively, means simultaneously actuating said shutters, whereby when one shutter is interposed between the bristles in one trough and said member, the other shutter is moved from across the end of the other trough, means: automatically moving the bristles in each trough toward the open end thereof, and means automatically timing the actuation of said shutter actuating means so that different kinds of bristles are automatically delivered to the brush nozzle as required during the production of a brush.
