Abstract
702,106. Vehicle lighting systems. KASEMANN,E. March 31. 1952 [March 30, 1951 ; April 9, 1951] No. 8138/52. Class 75 (4) A motor vehicle lighting system comprises a first system producing unpolarized light and a second system separated optically and/or spatially from the first system for producing polarized light having the distribution of a dipped light, switch means being provided to change over from one system to the other. Each system, consists of one or two headlamps and the electrical consumption of the bulbs of the second system is at least equal to the consumption of the first system. In the vehicle shown in Fig. 2 two headlamps 1, 2 provide unpolarized beams directed parallel to the road. Two additional headlamps 7 are fitted with polarizers and the polarized light is directed downwardly on to the road. The bulbs of the polarized headlamps 7 have an electrical consumption at least 30 per cent. higher than that of the bulbs of the unpolarized headlamps 1, 2 and their filaments operate at higher temperatures. The unpolarized headlamps have additional bulbs 5, 6 of low power energised with the polarized headlamps and serving as side indicating lamps ; the light intensity of these bulbs approximates to the intensity of the polarized light from the headlamps 7 as seen through an analyser. The driver of the vehicle is provided with a polarizing half-lens pair of spectacles or alternatively an analyser disc 10 may be mounted on the windscreen and be movable by a lever 18 in and out of the driver's field of vision. The movement of the screen actuates a switch 12 for switching from one lighting system to the other.
