[Also in Group XXIII] A device for controlling cyclic displacements of a movable machine tool member, e.g. the carriage 2 of a grinding machine, relatively to the machine frame 1 comprises a piston 12 connected to the carriage by a rod 28 and controlled by a valve member 21 actuated by a feeler 13 co-operating with the periphery of a rotating cam 24 mounted on the frame 1. Pressure liquid is fed to chambers 15 and 18 on opposite sides of the piston by a pump 16 and the valve member controls leak from the chamber 15 via a passage 22 to a flexible pipe 23 leading to the sump 17. The valve member slides in the piston rod and movement of the valve member from its neutral position, i.e. a position in which the leakage is such that pressures on opposite sides of the piston are equal, is followed by the piston until the neutral position is again reached. The cam is rotated by a motor through a reduction gear. In another arrangement, the cam is mounted on the carriage 2 and the valve member slides in the frame 1. The cam may be in the form of a drum having a suitable groove for engagement by a lateral finger on the feeler.
