Abstract

[Also in Division B3] A programming apparatus for a machine such as a drill, mill or capstan lathe, comprises a cylinder 1 having pressure fluid supply pipes 14, 15 and an internal longitudinal groove 2 communicating with a tank or with the atmosphere through apertures 3, and with the inside of a rotatable sleeve 9 through selectively aligned holes 21 therein, the holes being circumferentially and axially spaced to determine the particular programme of movements to be carried out by a piston 11 slidable in the sleeve 9 as a result of differential pressure on opposite sides thereof, and having a rod 12 secured thereto for controlling the machine. In operation pressure fluid from a common source is divided into two streams, each stream passing through an adjustable flow restrictor and a flow indicator to thereafter act on either side of the piston 11. The flow restrictors are adjusted to create the required pressure differential and to compensate for the different effective areas of each side of the piston 11. If one of the holes 21 is aligned with the groove 2 in the cylinder, fluid can discharge through the apertures 3 and the piston therefore moves to cover the hole 21 whereby the force acting on the piston balances and the piston 11 comes to rest over the hole. When the piston is to be moved to a new position a pinion 25 engaging a geared flange 24 on the sleeve 9 is rotated to align another hole 21 with the groove. Alternatively the flange may be formed with ratchet teeth whereby the flange can be periodically rotated by a pawl or push rod. Fig. 6 shows a programming apparatus wherein the piston 11 completes part of its stroke quickly and the remaining part at a slower speed. In operation fluid ahead of the piston initially discharges through the hole 21 aligned with the groove 2 and a pipe 26 having a restrictor 27 until the piston covers the hole 21 whereby fluid is discharged through the pipe 26 only.
