Abstract
A method of production of metallic elements, such as plain bearings, comprises forming a composite material of Cu-Pb or Cu-Pb-Sn or Cu-Pb-Sn-Fe containing for example up to 30 per cent. of Pb. by a casting or sintering process on a ferrous or other backing, removing the lead at, or to any desired depth extending from the surface, by chemical or electrochemical action to leave a porous structure and thereafter filling the pores with a friction-modifying substance. The composite material may have unconnected Pb particles dispersed in a matrix in which case pores p are formed at the surface, or the Pb and Cu matrix may form an interlaced reticulate, sponge like structure in which case Pb is removed entirely or to any desired depth from the surface. If the composite material is produced by sintering a composite layer of powders comprising two or more strata of different compositions, the porous structure produced is graded or localised. The pores may be filled with poly-tetra-fluoroethylene or other long chain polymerised fluorine compound. Specifications 657,080, 657,085, 676,300, [all in Group XXXIV], and 677,240 are referred to.
