Abstract

An oil-impregnated porous metal part adapted for use in a bearing is made by sintering the part, dipping it for not more than 5 seconds in an oil suspension of molybdenum sulphide, sizing it, subjecting it to vacuum, applying oil to it and then releasing the vacuum. A molybdenum sulphide coating is thus welded to the surface, and at least part of the surface pores are left open. As applied to the production of a porous bronze bearing a mixture of powdered copper, tin and graphite is compacted in a mould having the shape of the desired part, but somewhat oversize. The part is sintered at 1500 DEG F. for 30 minutes, and is then dipped for not more than 5 seconds in a 4 per cent suspension in oil, preferably warmed to 150 DEG F. of pulverized purified natural molybdenite having a particle size of up to 70 microns. It is next sized by placing it in a mould and compressing it to fit the mould by a core-piece or pin which moves relatively to the working surface of the bearing, thus firmly uniting the layer of molybdenum sulphide to the underlying metal. The bearing is finally subjected to vacuum in an autoclave, after which oil is introduced to cover the parts and the vacuum is released. Other materials such as iron-copper mixtures, powdered iron and powdered brass may be similarly treated.
