[Also in Group XXIII] A torque-limiting spanner comprises two hingedly connected members, and a resilient element or rod b rigidly mounted on the inner end of one member a and contacting at its free end a lever d pivoted on the other member c, the free ends of the element and lever describing different arcs when the spanner is rotated, and the element slipping off the end of the lever to remove the applied torque when these arcs intersect. As shown, the member c is hinged about the ratchet head f of the body a. The dowel v for receiving the box-spanner socket u may be moved to either side of the head. The spring rod b is longitudinally adjustable by a screw i and rigidly fixed by a screw p so as to describe an arc about point o. It carries an adjustable flanged sleeve s on its free end which operates through levers (not shown) two dial gauges r. The lever d is adjustable, to alter the limiting torque, by a screw h against an adjustable spring in a bore m<SP>1</SP>. The spanner is rotated by a handle e to tighten a screw or nut and when the limiting torque is reached, the released rod b is cushioned by a leaf spring k or by pneumatic or hydraulic means. In a modification, the member c is automatically returned to the position shown by a pull-back spring acting on a pin extending through a bore in the member c and connected to the rod b.
