Abstract

About 0.05 to 1 per cent. by volume of an aliphatic thioether of a monocarboxylic acid is added to a gasoline fuel having an ASTM 50 per cent. distillation point below about 310 DEG F. The preferred thioethers have the formula CxH2x+1-S-(CH2)yCOOH where x is from 8 to 25 and y is from 1 to 3. Specified additives are decyl, lauryl, 2-methylhexyl, tetradecyl, cetyl and stearyl mercaptoacetic and mercaptopropionic acids. The preferred amount is from 0.1 to 0.3 per cent. by volume. If desired the thioether additive may be employed together with an ester or partial ester of a polyhydric alcohol and a relatively high molecular weight organic acid, such as the esters of ethylene and diethylene glycol and glycerol with oleic, ricinoleic and naphthenic acids, pentaerythritol mono-oleate and dioleate, sorbitan monolaurate, monopalmitate, monostearate and mono-oleate, sorbitan trioleate or the polyoxyalkylene derivatives of these esters. The ester additive may be employed in amounts of from 0.05 to 1.0 per cent. by volume of the gasoline (preferably 0.1 to 0.3 per cent.). Comparative tests are reported on a heptane fuel without any additive, the same heptane fuel to which is added 0.1 per cent. of laurylmercaptoacetic acid, and on the same heptane fuel with the addition of 0.1 per cent. of a 50/50 mixture of lauryl mercaptoacetic acid and a complex ester of a polyethylene glycol and ricinoleic acid.
